Step 3-First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Ms. Rivera thinks that…”
Then, write a question about the chosen comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble.

The Middle Ages is a period of European history that lasted from the 5th until the 15th centuries. My class is discussing whether or not it should be called The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, The Age of Faith, and The Golden Age of Europe. I believe it should be called The Dark Ages
ReplyDeleteThe late Middle Ages were marked by difficulties such as Famine, Plague and war. The Black Death was one of the most devastating times. It hit Europe during 1348-1350. The Black Death killed between 75 million and 200 million people. It had killed a third of the European population. People with the disease suffered from horrible symptoms. One of the symptoms is having buboes on your groin, neck, and armpit. The buboes ooze pus and bleed out when exposed. Buboes are the swelling lymph nodes. A lymph node is an oval shaped organ of the immune system.
Doctors back then did not have the knowledge to cure these people like we do now. With the knowledge that we have today, less people would have died. This is Why I think the Middle Ages should be called The Dark Ages.
Gethro thinks that the late middle ages should be called the dark ages. The reason why he thinks this is because the late middle ages were marked by difficulties such as famine, black death and war.
DeleteIs the black death the only reason that the middle ages should be called the dark ages?
Dark Ages
ReplyDeleteThe Black Death started in China. It had many wars. Europe lost so many people. Many were killed, and others died with diseases.
There was a great population loss. A third of the population of Europe died from the outbreak. They killed between 75 million and 200 million people. In many European cities were quickly forced to dig graveyards where the dead could be buried.
Many diseases reported all over Europe. Survivors from the villages and towns would run away to other regions, spreading the disease even further. There have been many diseases like small pox and measles. European population only began to grow on the last decades of the 15th century.
Financial business was disrupted as debtors died and their creditors had no one to pay them. Construction projects stopped or were abandoned altogether. Guilds lost their craftsmen and could not replace them. The labor shortage was very severe and wages rose.
The Black Death effected upon Europe. It was one of the most devastating in human history.

DeleteStella Believes that the middle ages should be called the dark ages due to dieases. How did the Diease get to Europe any way in the first place?
DeleteWell Xavier, the disease got to Europe because The Black Death was spread by fleas that were carried by rats or other small rodents. The spread of The Black Death followed all of the trade routes to there.
DeleteWhy was the disease called the Black Death?

ReplyDeleteThe middle ages should be called the “Dark Ages.” Those times had wars and a lot of diseases. Many people were killed on purpose and by an accident. People made wars. Wars made diseases. Wars and diseases made Death. Those ages wore very violent. Those were the Dark Ages.
The Fall of Rome came in 210 theories of how it came. People who were poor got poorer. People who were rich got richer. Poor people became so poor that they became the slaves of the rich people. It was very hard for people to live. The poor got very little money. Almost no money at all. Rome had a lot of land. One of the theories the Rome fell is that there was a war.
The Black Death was one of the most horrible events that happened in Europe. The disease was spread around Europe very fast. The sailors from China brought the disease with them to Europe. The disease was carried by the black rats. Third of Europe died after the Black Death. It took Europe 120-150 years to recover their population. But then the Black Death came back and spread around most parts of the globe. And like the last time the disease just disappeared.
One of the most horrible things that happened in the middle ages are wars. The knights were very violent. They killed most of the people. Most people that died were the Jews. The knights traveled to cities killed people and robbed them. The knights almost like Vikings. They always traveled on big fast boats and fought with little cities of the king.
The lesson is community. If people stick together they can do anything. If human make the decisions and choices there can be only peace. The Dark Ages taught us peace. It taught us to stick together no matter what happens. The middle ages should be called the “Dark Ages”
In the introduction Egor states that it should be the Dark Ages and the evidence he uses is: the Black Death, violence committed by Vikings and Crusaders and the dissolution of the Roman Empire leading to anarchy. How does your conclusion contradict your introduction?
DeleteEgor i like how you put alot of information in the middle ages. How many people died in the black death?

ReplyDeleteThe middle Ages should be called the “Dark Ages.” During the 800’s through the 1400’s there were wars, diseases, and cities collapsing. One of the reasons why it should be called the Dark Ages is because of the “Black Death.” The Black Death was a disease caused by rats. It killed Millions of people. The western European side grew weaker and weaker. It took 120 to 150 YEARS just for the western side of Europe to be the same population. Many family members died quickly though. The next reason is the “Fall Of Rome.” Rome collapsed one day on all of the Romans destroying their beautiful city. No one knows how it ever happened. Modern day Scientists came up with 210 Theoretical Theories of what could’ve possibly happened. None of the answers were accurate. The most painful event that happened during the middle ages was war. War caused people to die. There used to be people called PEASEANTS that were trained as Knights to rob and slaughter innocent people. They would travel on big, long, and fast boats around the world attacking little cities or towns. They showed no mercy. They came without Warning. This is why the Middle ages should be called the “Dark Ages.”

DeleteXavier believes the middle ages shold be called the Dark Ages. The evidence is that there were many wars and diseases that killed millions of people. How did people get on with their lives and how did they work when the labor shortage was so severe?
DeleteStella here is your answer
DeleteThey waited for things to get better in certain parts of town and then got as many people as they can working again or moved to the other sides of europe and get jobs there instead
They also took parts of towns making grave stone quickly

ReplyDelete“What Shall We Call The Middle Ages?”
ReplyDeleteThe plague spreading causing death at every corner, war over pointless reasons, problems getting fixed by making them worse. Let me introduce you to the Dark Ages. This is not the Golden Age of Europe. A lot of this is due to lack of education and unintelligent decisions. I can almost visualize the clouds forming over Europe, the sun is fading away, and the darkness is here.
The large Roman Empire was hard to govern. Their solution split it into two. Both sides had their own Emperor. The outcome is not what they expected. The Western Roman Empire which included the city of Rome, actually had gotten weaker. On top of the Western Roman Empire getting weaker many Romans were out of work because of the use of serfs. The Emperors weren’t great either, the Emperor was picked by blood, the blood line of family or shedding the blood of others. Some Emperors shouldn’t have been Emperors because they couldn’t lead the people. Many barbarian tribes were attacking sections of the Western Roman Empire in 400AD. As Rome was holding on by a thread in 476AD, the Visigoths attacked Rome, cutting that thread plunging Europe into the Dark Ages.
A total disregard for human life, a countless amount of lives lost, a hundred years of fighting and war. All this for the control of France. The French King died without a direct heir to the throne in 1328AD. King Edward III of England, the grandson of the French King was the next person in line for the throne. But the French didn’t like the idea of having an English King. Then Philip Valois the French nephew of the King, thought he should be King. So they got ready for this gruesome war with England. This uncivilized behavior is dominant in the Dark Ages.
Piles of dead bodies lined the streets. Houses were burnt down because the people who lived in them were infected and died. People locked their doors and had flowers to help protect themselves from the horrible plague, the Black Death. None of these solutions helped protect them from the Black Death. Little did they know, the trading ships coming from Asia were carrying more than just cargo, the rats and fleas also aboard carried the Black Death. The Black Death caused bulging red ring marks with dark spots in the middle, this occurred on the infected arms and necks. The infected then got high fevers. They slowly grew sicker until death set in. Unsanitary conditions and lack of medical knowledge helped contribute to the spread of this deadly plague. This plague wiped out over 1/3rd of Europe’s population. Hundreds of years later we can still feel the effect of the plague in the nursery rhyme “Ring Around The Rosie”.
The Dark Ages is a perfect title for this time in human history. If we track the ignorant decisions made over an era, we can see how humankind declined into such a dark age. In an attempt to better govern Rome, they divided it into two areas. This was an uneducated decision that only weakened Rome and left them vulnerable to be attacked. The Hundred Year War is a perfect example of uneducated and uncivilized behavior. The pointless reason for this war was just that the French were reluctant to be ruled by the English. The lack of knowledge only helped to spread the Black Death, if only they would have known the correct measures to take to stop its deadly course. If we review all these failures, we can grow from the mistakes of our ancestors. By studying our past we can brighten our future.
Richard M believes that we should call the Middle Ages the Dark Ages. His evidence is the Western Roman Empire and the devastating Black Death. He did a good job incorporating details
Deleteto prove his case. How can we use the Black Death and the Western Roman Empire to make the future better and learn from the mistakes they did?

DeleteEgor thinks that the Middle Ages should be called the Dark Ages because of wars and diseases. Why did you think that wars lead to diseases?
DeleteDaniel R:
DeleteRichard believes that the middle ages should be called the dark ages because the Black Death killed tons. I really like the details you put into it. How come you said wars would be part of the dark ages?
I think the Dark Ages best describes the Middle Ages between 500 – 1,400 in Europe. This happened when the most devastating attacks happened such as the Black Death and the Crusades. These attacks destroyed cities, homes, and families.
ReplyDeleteThe Crusades were a series of wars between Europeans, Jews, Christians, and Muslims. There were a total of nine crusades! It started out when Pope Urban the second wanted to have more Holy Land for the people in his religion. After two- hundred years of harsh traveling, hunger, disease, and freezing weather the Muslims won. The Christians made a big effort to keep their territory but they couldn’t.
The Black Death was a terrible disease that killed between 75 to 200 million people. That is almost equivalent to 2/3 of the European population. There were hearsays that the Black Death disease was carried by mice. During the Middle Ages there was no cure to save people from dying from the Black Death.
The “Big Picture” is how we should prepare ourselves for the future for any attacks like the Black Death. Also, we should stop wars like the Crusade war and live in a Peaceful earth. In conclusion, this is why I think the Middle Ages should be called The Dark Ages, thanks to the Crusades and the Black Death.
Javon Delva thinks that we should call the Middle Ages The Dark Ages. His evidence is The Black Death and The Crusades. What do you mean by "future attacks" like The Black Death? This is modern day, with all technological equipment.
DeleteJavon thinks that we should call The Middle Ages, The Dark Ages because 200 years of destruction from the Crusades, and the horrible disease from The Black Death. I also have the same question as Hussnain. What do you mean by "future attacks"? Do you mean another disease causing half of Europe's human population to be wiped out again? Or do you mean another war causing more destruction and sicknesses?
DeleteThe Age of Faith
ReplyDeleteThe Middle Ages was a very important time period in Europe. It lasted from the 5th century to the 15th century. Many people believe that this time period can be called different things such as the age of feudalism, the dark ages, the golden ages, or the age of faith. I believe it should be called the age of faith. Through this essay I will be giving facts and an argument on why it should be called the age of faith.
The Roman Catholic Church played a role in all of this. The church was important because mostly all the people believed in God .The church also was mainly the government during the middle ages .People believed that if you did not give money to the church or did not believe in the church you would not go to heaven . For example: peasants who worked on church land gave 10% of what they earned to the church. The peasants did not even earn a lot of money and were very poor. they did this because they thought if they didn’t pay their tax to the church they would not go to heaven .
The Crusades are another reason I believe this. The Crusades were volunteer armies .The Crusades were made up of knights and peasants they were hired by the Pope .The Pope needed them to take back the Holy Land from the Arabs. The Pope wanted to take it back because the Arabs weren’t letting them visit anymore .The holy land is Jerusalem. Christians called it the holy land because they believe Jesus died there. It was a success. The crusades sign was a red cross because it was to remind them that they were fighting for a holy reason.
My last argument is it should be called the age of faith because almost everyone believed in God and were Christians. Catholicism is the largest practiced religion today.
In conclusion, I believe that the Middle Ages should be called the age of faith. All these arguments that I made are examples of why this is what I believe .I hope you enjoyed my essay and you agree with me.
Breanna_5 thinks the appropriate title for the Middle Ages is the Age of Faith. The evidence in which she has provided is: The Catholic Church, The Crusades, and that everyone was Christian and believed in god. How could this be called the Age of Faith when there is so much death, war, and injustices, wouldn’t this be a darker time in history, what is faith good for?
DeleteYanet 634
ReplyDeleteI think that the Dark Ages should be the title of the middle ages. I think this because in the Crusades there were a lot of wars in Europe. In the Black Death there was a disease going around and killing many people.
ReplyDeleteIn the Crusades there were a lot of wars in Europe including the 2 main religions, the Christians and Islam. One part of Europe was falling down.
In the Black Death there was a spreading disease and it killed many people. The Jews were burned alive while in the era of the Black Death. The victims that had the disease were blessed. It was really devastating.
I think that the big picture is peace. I think this because there would be no wars against the Christians and Islam religions. Also because the Jews would not suffer and be burned alive.
Sean Abt thinks that the middle ages should be called the dark ages. His evidence is about how the black death killed many people. How many people did the black death kill?
DeleteHave you ever seen destruction that seemed like it would never be rectified? Well, between 500 and 1400 in Europe, there was a lot of annihilation going on. For instance, there was a battle that continued for hundreds of years that kept on going until one party triumphed. After thinking for a while, I thought that I would call this epoch The Dark Ages. Like I said previously, there was a lot of annihilation going on. It seemed like Europe was down and on its last legs. But somehow, it got back up on its feet while still having money and power. One example about why I would call this era “The Dark Ages” is because of The Hundreds Years War. It was fought between England and France. But after a while, France had no men to fight in the war. They were all decimated by the English forces. There were only women and children left. There were some men that were left, but they retreated back to their homes. These lucky few knew that they were going to lose. Since they knew that, they departed from France and set off to England where they lived there happily. For the women whose husbands were silenced in the war, they didn’t know what to do. Since all of the French army was gone, France started to send in children to the war to fight the English. France lost the war soon after that. After France lost, there was a lot of misery. Farmlands were laid to waste and the population was exterminated. It took a few hundred years for France’s population to grow back a little bit, but it did not normalize completely.
ReplyDeleteThe next example for why I would call this era “The Dark Ages” is because of The Crusades. The Crusades were a series of military campaigns and battles waged by European Christians. It was fought between Muslims and Christians for Jerusalem. They destroyed that part of Europe. At that time, just as today, Jerusalem was the holy land for Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Muslims ruled Jerusalem. They allowed Christian and Jewish pilgrims to visit the place or to live there if they agreed to pay their taxes like everyone else. At one point, some Arabs came to Jerusalem and took it over. They didn't allow any Christian or Jewish pilgrims to come there anymore. They were banned. The Pope called for a Crusade to take back Jerusalem. The Muslims and Christians fought each other for about 200 years. The Christians won the battle the first time, but it wasn't a permanent victory, though. After 50 years, Muslims once again conquered Jerusalem. There were many other battles that were a part of The Crusades after that, but they were all lost. The people of Europe stopped asking to continue The Crusades, knowing that they would lose time and time again. From that day forward, Muslims still controlled Jerusalem.
My last reason for why I would call this era “The Dark Ages” is because of the Black Death. It was a disease that was spreading around all of Europe by black rats. People to this day don’t know how this disease started. After this big event that happened, 70-200 million people or two-thirds of Europe was dead. Only about one-third of Europe was still alive. Some people are afraid that this disease may start again. Today, doctors are able to treat the illness once it has been diagnosed. Long time ago, there wasn’t that much education or knowledge. People didn’t know anything about The Black Death. Some of the medicine that people gave just made it worse. People died more quickly than usual. This is why I would call these ages the Dark Ages. I think that we should look to our past to better understand our present and future. Today, there are many diseases like Cancer and AIDS that cannot be cured. Many people die from these diseases in our world today. Also, nations are angry at each other. A war seems like it can break out. There will be more destruction than the past because now we have technology that we didn’t have in the past. We should think, if the past caused so much damage in wars, how much damage would a war cause us now with 21st century technology? This concludes why I would call this epoch The Dark Ages.
Hussnain believes that the Middle Ages should be the dark ages. His evidence is how the Black Death killed between 70-200 million people. Also he talked about what happened in the crusades. If the past caused a lot of damage in wars without technology, shouldn't more technology cause more destruction?
DeleteThat is what I was saying. I was saying in the conclusion at the end that we should imagine how much damage 21st century technology caused
DeleteHussnain S thinks the appropriate title for the Middle Ages is the Dark Ages. The evidence in which he has provided is: The Hundred Years War, The Crusades, and The Black Death. Hussnain S stated that even today we don’t know how the Black Death started. The question I have is if we don’t Know how the Black Death started, how do we cure it and stop it from becoming an epidemic again.
DeleteNowadays, doctors can find if a person has the disease. I don't know how, but they found a cure
DeleteFrom Maat:
DeleteHussnain's argument is that the middle ages should be renamed the Dark Ages. Hussnain supports his argument with details about annihilation. An example of annihilation are the crusades between Europe and France. My question to Hussnaine is if the part of Europe that was destroyed changed an important part of society.
The middle ages should be called "The Dark ages".
ReplyDeleteThe dark ages started in China.
The middle ages should be called the dark ages because all the struggles they went though. For example the sicknesses such as the small pox. Also there were many wars. There was terrible pollution. The pollution killed over 700 people. Most major cites were quickly furred to dig hundreds of grade yards. Were the dead could be buried.
The black death was about cooperating with each other during wars. Also helping each other with crops and medicine.
The Black Death was one of the most devastating human history.
Yanet says that it should be called the dark ages because there was a sickness called small pox, and there was terrible pollution. My question is: what caused it to have terrible pollution and could they stop it in any way? Also where did small pox come and why did it spread to so many people did they take precaution?

ReplyDeleteWhat shall we call The Middle Ages? We should call it The Dark Ages! Why should we call The Middle Ages, The Dark Ages you ask? One reason is because The Crusades started and sicknesses and diseases were flying around, then it all led up to The Black Death spreading from central Asia to Europe causing the most devastating plague in human history 4 decades later.
ReplyDeleteThe Crusades started in 1095. It lasted for 200 about years and ended in 1291. The Crusades was a series of wars to restore Christian access to holy places near Jerusalem. The first crusade was called by Pope Urban II. The Crusades happened about 4 decades before The Black Death, but in between those 4 decades after The Crusades ended in 1291 there were sicknesses and diseases flying around. Sicknesses and diseases killed a handful of people in Europe. Pollution made it even worse for the citizens of Europe.
The Black Death first appeared in Europe in 1347. After a few years The Black Death spread all over Europe. The Black Death was one of the most devastating plagues in human history. The Black Death peaked in Europe at around 1348 and 1350 killing about 200 million people and wiping out nearly half the human population. The Black Death was said to be started in China or central Asia. It then traveled along Silk Road and was passed on down to Europe. Unfortunately feared villagers who survived the fatal disease fled to find another place to live, and the Black Death Spread even further.
Sources: Google, Wikipedia, and other various websites that give info about The Dark Ages, The Black Death, and The Crusades. Thank You for reading :D
DeleteWillis says that the Middle Ages should be called the Dark Ages because of the Crusades started and sicknesses and diseases were flying around. My question is, how did the Black Death plague travel along the Silk Road and reach Europe?
DeleteThe Middle Ages is a period of European history. It lasted from the 5th to the 15th centuries. I believe it should be called the Dark Ages.
ReplyDeleteThe Middle Ages are called the Dark Ages because of invasions. Invasions had happened frequently during this time period. There was this group called the Vikings. They were well known for their invasions. They would steal food, goods, money. They had killed innocent peasants and townspeople. They burned down cities. Because of these invasions, people were left with no food or no home. The Vikings would also take innocent people and use them as slaves instead of killing them.
Another reason the Middle Ages should be called the Dark Ages is because of the wars that were happening. There were constant battles over land. Feudal Warfare was common between manors. The manors had created problems. There wasn’t any communication with the outside, which prevented learning and ideas.
The Black Death is one of the main reasons why the Middle Ages should be called the Dark Ages. The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. The most widely accepted theory was that the plague was caused by bad air. It killed between 75 million and 200 million people. It is thought to have started in China or central Asia. It had travelled along the Silk Road and reached the Crimea by 1346. From there, it was probably carried by Oriental Rat Fleas living on the black rats. They were regular passengers on merchant ships. It had spread throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population. The plague reduced the world population from an estimated 450 million to a number between 350 and 375 million in the 14th century. It had taken 150 years for Europe’s population to recover. The plague occasionally reappeared in Europe until the 19th century. The importance of hygiene was recognized only in the nineteenth century. Before the nineteenth century, the streets were filthy. There were live animals of all sorts around and human parasites abounding. A disease like the Black Death would spread around easily in such conditions.
I think we should use the history from the past to prepare ourselves for something like a catastrophe. Also I believe that everyone should get along and be at peace with each other so that wars and invasions wouldn’t happen. That is my essay on what I think the Middle Ages should be called.

ReplyDeleteThe Dark Ages of Europe
Invasions, famine, and terrible sanitation describe “The Dark Ages” (476-1453). In The Dark Ages, there were terrible clans of barbaric people that ruined and invaded towns in Europe. Then there were diseases that killed people in a week to a couple of days. Lastly, there were series of wars that lasted many years, up to one hundred sixteen years. Due to all the problems during The Dark Ages life was not easy, nor was it a prosperous time. If one had survived these times he or she would rather have died.
Invasions was horrid, Vikings were very vicious people who would invade areas around them frequently. They stole food, goods, valuables, and money from the towns. The Vikings would create devious war tactics in order to invade towns. Also using their long boats and their fascinating sense of direction, they found places to burn and stole everything they could. Then they killed people, but the people who lived got the worst treatment. The Vikings took them as slaves, but the people who very rarely lived and stayed in their ruined area where their town used to be. There was no more food or money to survive on. They had two choices, one choice was to pack what was left of the town and find another town to live in. Or you could have been left to die.
The diseases that were the most destructive in human history occurred in the era of The Dark Ages. It had killed nearly twenty million people. It is named The Black Death, this names goes for three versions of this disease. The bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic plague, the bubonic version is the most common plague out of the three. Buboes or swellings as large as an egg to an apple appear on a neck or armpits of a victim. This version is spread by infected fleas give the virus to a rat, and then a rat will share the plague to a human. You will usually live one week before you die. The pneumonic plague affects the respiratory system. This is more dangerous than the bubonic version. It can spread from human to human by simply breathing in the bacteria cells into your lungs. The people who have this plague will only live a few days.
The last plague is the septicemic version which attacks the blood system. This plague gets spread just like the bubonic virus. Also, untrained doctors came up with treatments that do not help the victim at all. They used leeches or an open cut to get blood out of the human. And used fires, and sweet smelling herbs to make the air in the room full of sick people smell better since the odor was foul. At that time, the people were ignorant of medicine. And there wasn’t a cure for the plagues.
A series of wars that lasted one hundred sixteen years that took place in The Dark Ages, surprisingly called The One Hundred Year War. This had started in, May 1337 and ended July 1453. Philip’s (Philip VI of France) plan was to conqueror the English Territories. The English won many battles especially in the battles of Crécy, Poitiers and Agincourt. Since the French won the Siege of Orléans, they have gotten the title of victory. Not only the one hundred year war, but also The Crusades, it is also the reason why The Middle Ages is called The Dark Ages. The Crusades fought series of Holy Wars against Islam. They brought aggressiveness to the peaceful Middle East. They tried to mold the Holy Land so their king can take over such land. After such battles, the war was over and the Muslims won.
The Middle Ages show how we have evolved in medicine, technology, and daily life.
This era shows us a very hard time in life. Where there is constant war, invasions, famine, and diseases. Because we know that The Black Death killed millions of people, we know the importance of a highly technical medical system where we can cure diseases and sicknesses. We also need to keep our community together so that we don’t have wars. In our current time now a nuclear war could last as long as thirteen seconds. We learned the importance of an ally system where if one nation does something out of hand we team up against it. This is referring to the Vikings where they did whatever they wanted and slaughtered many people. So if one person wants to know only about the tragic events that happened in The Middle Ages, they can study The Dark Ages of Europe.

MIDDLE AGES
Disasters happened in the middle ages. Some disasters like the Crusades and The Black Death. The Crusades and The Black Death should be in the dark ages because many people have suffered. The Crusades was a period in time where many wars in Asia between 1095 and 1291. The Crusades did this because they wanted to bring back Christianity to the holy places. The Black Death was a disease between 1348 and 1350. It started it China and spread out to Europe.
The Crusades are mostly about Roman Catholics from all over Western Europe. The Crusades were mostly against Muslims in the Levant. There were a few successes and then the Crusaders had to return home. The soldiers became Crusaders by taking vows. There emblem was the cross. The name Crusade was also used to tell about religious campaigns against pagans, neurotics and other people between 1100 and 1600. After fighting with Christian and Muslims powers they led to an alliance with the Islamic. The crusaders had a major impact on Europe. It affected political, economic, and social behaviors in Europe. It weakened the Christian Byzantine Empire. Later that empire fell into Muslim Turks.
The Black Death was carried by fleas living on the back of the rats that were merchant ships. It spread out to the Mediterranean. The Black Death killed 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population. The plague caused destruction of religion, social, and economics in European history. It took about 150 years for the population of Europe to recover. Did the people in Europe get influenced by the Black Death to live by the moment? It also made persecution of minorities such as Jews, foreigners, beggars, and lepers. The disease got its name because their skin would turn black. The disease was caused by yersina pestic, which is carried by rodents. The plague led to famine, starting in 1331. You can notice by tumors in the groin and armpits. These would grow as large as an apple. The black spots will appear on the arm or thigh and the people knew death was near. People usually die 2 to 7 days after the first sign of infection. Another sign of the plague were freckles and rashes and could be cause by flea bites. The disease could affect the lungs so they could not breathe.
Both the Crusades and the Black Death had a huge effect on social, political, economics and religion.

ReplyDeleteThe dark ages should be called the Feudal System. The Feudal System is not all a good system. The Feudal System caused people to be poor and homeless. The Feudal System caused people to die from starvation and no shelter. It also caused people to overpower classes.
The Feudal System over ruled. People were dominated by lords who possessed financial or social power. For the Mangna Carta , the king made bad choices. King Henry made many wars that were uncusesful. That led to a loss of English barons./ the making of clause 61 was a mistake. Clause 61 caused the barons to attack and over through the king, it was a challenge to john authority as rulling monarchy
I conclude that people make bad choices. Like clause 61was a bad choice to make. Also the feudal system caused people homeless poor and dead. Many people and kings made bad choices that affect people like raising tax.
Christopher thinks that the middle ages should be called the feudal age. His evidence is the clause 61. What is clause 61.
DeleteThe Dark Ages is a good name for the middle ages. In my manuscript it is about The Black Death and Joan of arc. Dark Ages was the early medieval period of western European history. In the year 476–800 when there was no Roman emperor in the West.
ReplyDeleteThe Black Death was contagious to everybody in the area in Europe. Over half of the population had died. The graves filled up fast. Bodies were not berried in graves. Nearly one third of the population died about 200 million people in Europe died out.
Joan was born the daughter of Jacques d’Arcy and Isabelle Rome. Joan's parents owned about 50 acres. Her father supplemented his farming work with a minor position as a village official. They lived in an isolated patch of eastern France that remained loyal to the French crown despite being surrounded by Burundian lands. Several local raids occurred during her childhood and on one occasion her village was burned.

ReplyDeleteIn the middle ages, people took on many roles and troubles on behalf of Europe's empires. These roles and troubles consist of crusades, the fall of Rome, and the gain of Gothic architecture.I believe that the middle ages should be called the Dark Ages because of all the struggles and sacrifices that were made in that time.People died, sacrificed many things to help each other survive, and fought in crusades to try and make better societies. This all made the middle ages a "dark time".
One of the things that made the middle ages a dark time was the black death. The black death was the most "devastating pandemics in human history". This disease spread all over Europe between 1348 and 1350. The black death is thought to have started in China or central Asia and was brought to Europe by ship. More than 25 million people were killed in this tragedy, which was more than 40 percent of Europe's population.
Besides the Black death, crusades also made the middle ages a dark time. Alot of these crusades resulted in the gain of Gothic architecture, one of the most valuable prizes in Europe. Before Europe gained Gothic architecture, the holy land had to be gained. The crusades represented a great power of the catholic churches, but at the same time represented a great failure. The cost of the churches were really high, and the crusades resulted in the fall of the Byzan empire.
In conclusion, These examples support my argument of why the middle ages should be called the dark ages. These examples show how people have struggled to make better societies. The middle ages was a scary time.
Ma'at believes that The Middle Ages should be called "Dark Times". The evidence she presented to support her statement is the Crusades, The Fall Of Rome, and Gothic architecture. How does the Crusades lead to the gain of Gothic Architecture?

ReplyDeleteMiddle Ages
The time from 500 AD to 1400 AD is called the middle ages. This period was marked by sufferings, years of wars, famine, deadly diseases like the black death. This period could be called the Dark Ages due to all these reasons. But this period could also be called “The age of Feudalism” as there was a raise of feudalism after the fall of Rome followed by disorder and anarchy. However, this was also the time when people had faith in God and the religion and it was believed man’s role in life is to serve God. Christian catholic churches provided spiritual direction. Many religious leaders in churches were powerful than the politicians. However some call it the age of Golden Europe which is not fully justified in my opinion because even though the renaissance started in late fourteenth century in Italy it was not very successful till the sixteenth century. So what label correctly describes the middle ages? Perhaps every one of them. In my opinion it would be the “Age of Faith”
After the fall of the Roman Empire there was not a single government which ruled the entire European continent. At this time the church provided the much needed direction and support that the leaders and common people required. The church had power over all of Europe and Popes had power to start or stop a war. People were willing to fight for the church. Everyone in a village or town was influenced by the monastery, priest and the bishop. Also they had to give 10% of their earnings to the church and the church did not pay back their taxes. This means they became very rich and powerful. People were willing to fight wars called “The Crusades” to spread the Christian religion and to reclaim the holy land in Jerusalem. Everyone from the nobles to the pheasants who never fought in a war before were willing to fight to take back Jerusalem. Though many people lost their lives in this war they were ready to do so to protect their religion. During this period another way to show their faith is to build huge architecture called cathedrals. They were the largest buildings and were usually built in the center of the town in Romanesque style and later in the Gothic style. These cathedrals took years and years to build and they were masterpieces. However, no one took credit for all this work because it was done for the god and the religion. It was not for individual glory
These evidences show that it is appropriate to call the Middle Ages the “Age of Faith”. Study of Middle Ages history often provides ideas about how people lived long time before and what mistakes they made and what good things we can learn from them. It helps us understand their life style and the way they did things then. It also shows why the middle ages lead to the renaissance.
I would pick the Dark Ages because life in Europe was very difficult during 500-1400 years. The life of people was not easy. Many people were poor and suffered of difficult work and starvation. Also invasions happened frequently and constant battles over land were normal during this time period. In addition to this the bubonic plague was deadly to people.
ReplyDeleteInvasions were problems during this time. Vikings often attacked towns, steal food, goods, and money and then return back to their homeland. They killed innocent peasants and townspeople and burnt cities down. These invasions left people with no homes or food. In addition there were constant battles over land. Feudal warfare was common between manors.
The bubonic plague is one of the main reasons why the middle ages should be called the dark ages. The plague killed nearly a third of the population of Europe. People called this disease The Black Death. They lived in fear to catch it and die.
The Middle Ages should be called "The Dark Ages." The Middle Ages in Europe was a period that spread from about 500 A.D. until about 1500 A.D. The first half of that period is generally reffered to as the Dark Ages. The demarcation between the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages under this defenition was very likely the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire by Charlemagne. The Middle Ages was a time period between the classical and the modern time period.
ReplyDeleteThe Middle Ages have been described as the Dark Ages, the age of feudalism, the age of faith and the golden age of Europe. The Dark Ages consisted of many invasions, lethal weapons and the bubanic plague. The Dark Ages is the best name for the Middle Ages due to invasions. Invasions happened frequently during this time period. These invasions left people with no homes or food. The lucky ones were killed. Another reason the Middle Ages should be called the Dark Ages is because of the wars that were happening.
There were constant battles over land. Fuedal Warfare was common between manors. The manors also created problems . There was no communication with the outside which prevented learning and ideas. The bubanic plague is one of the main reasons why the Middle Ages should be called the Dark Ages. The plague kiiled nearly a third of the population of Europe. The time it takes to die with the pneumonic plague is usually betweeen two and four days, but can be as little as a few hours.
